After working in advertising design, Hoshiyama began exhibiting as an artist with a first solo show in 2010. The practice developed into Psychological Collage, a method that draws on the panel structure of manga and places different ways of painting within a divided composition. Influences from manga, Japanese painting, ink painting, and collage are brought together to explore the multiplicity and changing states of the inner self through portraiture. Solo exhibitions at roidworksgallery include Psychological Collage II FRAGMENTS in 2020. In 2024, Hoshiyama presented LAYOUT PAINTING as a further exhibition within the same series, continuing to work with multiple images and approaches on the painted surface. Kotaro Hoshiyama has also been featured on BS Fuji’s Break Zenya, a television programme introducing contemporary artists and their work.
