About the artist
Mariko Enomoto is a Tokyo-based painter born in 1982. She grew up with an interest in art and began teaching herself to paint after studying fashion. Alongside solo and group exhibitions, she creates artwork for books, music, film and theatre.
Her work is characterised by figures whose faces are obscured by plants, animals or landscapes. These portraits are not tied to a single identity, leaving space for viewers to bring their own memories and emotions to them. Drawing on everyday feelings and scenes from nature, she brings together elements that would not ordinarily coexist. After working in pencil and acrylic, she has increasingly focused on oil-painted portraits, also incorporating imagery drawn from myths, poetry and stories.

- 1982 — Born.
- 2021 — Solo exhibitions “モーメント” (OIL by Bijutsutecho, Tokyo) and “もりのなか・In the Woods” (elephant STUDIO, Tokyo; organised by WATOWA GALLERY).
- 2022 — Solo exhibition “わたしの庭” (Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Art Salon, Tokyo).
- 2023 — Solo exhibition “Melancholia” (elephant STUDIO, Tokyo; organised by WATOWA GALLERY). Publication of her first collection of works, “空と花とメランコリー” (Geijutsu Shinbunsha).
- 2025 — Solo exhibition “わたしをまもるもの” (T&Y Projects, Tokyo).
- 2026 — “METAMORPHOSES”, a two-person exhibition with KÄSI (KOHTOH).

- Cover illustration for Cho Nam-joo’s “82年生まれ、キム・ジヨン” (Chikuma Shobo)
- Cover illustration for Natsuko Imamura’s “むらさきのスカートの女” (Asahi Shimbun Publications)
- Illustrations for Mieko Kawakami’s “黄色い家”, serialised in the Yomiuri Shimbun
- “MIDSUMMER ROMANCE”, a capsule collection with INITIAL (2023)
Exhibitions with roidworksgallery
AaP/roidworksgallery presented her work at ART FAIR ASIA FUKUOKA 2024 and ART OSAKA 2025. In 2026, she participated in “One FACE 2026”, a group exhibition at roidworksgallery.
