Reconsidering values across time.

About the artist

Kei Hinotani is a contemporary artist from Kanazawa, Ishikawa, based in Okinawa. Experiences associated with meditation led him from figure modeling into contemporary art. Through historical civilizations, currency systems and idolatry, his work reconsiders social values and the structures of belief.

He worked under the name TARTAROS until June 2026 and began using his real name, Kei Hinotani, as his artist name in July 2026. TARTAROS continues as his studio and trade name.

Artistic practice

Ukiyo-e banknote paintings

Using genuine banknotes and gold and silver leaf, this series connects ukiyo-e, other traditional Japanese art and classical imagery from around the world with the present. Historical images and the currency supporting today’s economy share one surface, making the mechanisms of beauty and value visible.

Contemporary idol art

Beyond mythological and religious images, he treats nations, money, film, games, characters and fashion as contemporary objects of devotion. Reassembling symbols from antiquity to the present, he questions forms of belief and consumption in the twenty-first century.

Meditation and making

His paintings approach images arising in meditation at the boundary of figuration and abstraction. Working across sculpture, digital modeling, modeled forms and conceptual methods, he makes the emergence and formation of an image a subject of his practice.
