吉村芳生《阿吽の自画像》2011年

吉村芳生（1950–2013）は、山口県防府市出身の現代美術家。新聞の文字、写真、広告まで紙面全体を一字ずつ手で写し取った大型の鉛筆画と、実際の新聞紙に自画像を描く／刷る連作で知られている。

本作《阿吽の自画像》は2011年制作。「阿（あ）」と「吽（うん）」とは、仏教における宇宙の始まりと終わりを象徴する音であり、寺社の仁王像や狛犬が「阿形・吽形」として対をなすように、吉村はこの二音に自画像を重ねた。新聞紙という、世界の出来事を日々書き留め、やがて忘れられていく媒体の上に、一人の人間の顔が版で刷り出される。そこには個人の生と時代の記憶が交差する、静かな問いかけが宿っている。

本作は実際の新聞紙を支持体に、自画像をシルクスクリーンで刷った作品である。吉村の2011年の連作《「3.11から」新聞と自画像》は、「阿」「吽」を含む8種の自画像を新聞紙へシルクスクリーンで刷った作品群として、美術館の公式出品リストに記録されている。

Yoshimura Yoshio — Aun no Jigazō (Self-Portrait: Aum), 2011

Yoshimura Yoshio (1950–2013) was a contemporary artist from Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture. He is known both for large-scale pencil drawings in which he painstakingly copied entire newspaper pages by hand—including letters, photographs, and advertisements—and for series in which he drew or printed self-portraits on actual newspapers.

"Aun no Jigazō" takes its title from the syllables "a" and "un" — the Japanese equivalent of alpha and omega, the all-encompassing sounds of the Buddhist cosmos. Just as the Niō guardian figures at temple gates stand as paired expressions of creation and dissolution, Yoshimura mapped these forces onto his own face. In this 2011 work, the self-portrait is silkscreened on an actual sheet of newspaper. A daily record of society and the artist’s repeatedly examined face occupy the same surface.

Yoshimura's work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum. His posthumous recognition continues to grow internationally.
