Yoshio Yoshimura — Self-Portrait of A and Un, 2011

Yoshio Yoshimura (1950–2013), from Hofu in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is known for meticulous pencil drawings reproducing entire newspaper pages and for self-portraits drawn or printed on actual newspaper.

In this work, a self-portrait is screenprinted onto newspaper. A and Un symbolize the beginning and end in Buddhism, and appear as paired forms in temple guardians. Yoshimura brings these sounds together with the self-portrait, placing an individual face on a medium that records the events of each day.
