Profile and practice
Ryosuke Saito layers everyday experiences and the sensations of the digital age onto deep blue surfaces. Through youth fashion and culture, he considers the values of the world he inhabits.
Profile
Born in Sendai, Miyagi, in 1997. He graduated from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2019 and received an excellence award in its graduation exhibition. Drawing on daily impressions and events, his paintings explore the boundary between physical and digital spaces.
Approach to making
In the PRISM series, Saito translates changes in perception and bodily experience brought about by digital devices into figures and blue pictorial surfaces. Reflection, refraction and changes with the viewer’s position offer a way to consider the boundary between physical and virtual experience.
This account of his practice is based on the gallery text for the 2025 exhibition PRISM-II.
