About the Artist

Born in 1997 in Himeji, Hyogo. Koshiro Kihara studied art education at Shimane University before advancing to the Graduate School of Fine Arts (Oil Painting) at Onomichi City University. His paintings explore the coexistence of opposing elements — figuration and abstraction, the momentary and the eternal, truth and fiction — on a single canvas. Using a distinctive technique of molding clay and balloons into three-dimensional forms, he pours paint over them, drawing abstract imagery from the accidental traces left behind.

About This Work

This is one of my earlier works from when I developed my current style. While my concept hasn't changed, the appearance of the work feels quite different from today. At that time, I was more drawn to the materiality of paint itself — experimenting on canvas with questions like: how much do you need to paint before something becomes a recognizable object? How little can you paint before it becomes nothing more than color?
