Chiharu Kihara "Sharaku"

"Sharaku" by Chiharu Kihara is a Neo-Silkscreen print created in 2022.

The enigmatic Edo-period artist Toshusai Sharaku left behind powerful "okubi-e" (large-head portraits) — their bold compositions and piercing psychological depth have been reimagined by Kihara within her concept of "Vitalism." Bold black outlines, color reconstructed through Kihara's unique sensibility. Just as Sharaku captivated Edo audiences in the 18th century, Kihara brings to life a figure charged with raw energy for the modern era. An especially painterly work within the series.
